Coca Cola V/S Pepsi - Cola Wars

One of the oldest brand wars, the cola wars is more than a century-old war between two of the greatest brands of our times, Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
The former traces back its origin to early 1886 when a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia named John S. Pemberton accidentally created Cola instead of an anesthetic syrup that he intended to make initially while the latter was also invented by a pharmacist in 1893. Caleb Bradham created his drink in New Bern, N.C., and called it “Brad’s Drink initially before renaming it to Pepsi Cola in 1898.

By the time Pepsi came along, Coke was already selling more than a million gallons of Coke every year and they were ahead of the curve with their Marketing as well. They had their first celebrity endorsement in 1900 with a singer and actress Hilda Clark who was featured in Coke’s ads, where some of which were also printed on tin trays, which was considered an early form of practical product promotion.

Business Model

As a beverage, people generally tend to prefer Coke over Pepsi. The signature red and white logo is one of the most famous and recognizable brands in the world.

But as a business, Pepsi has much higher Market share than Coke. This is because Pepsi is not just a beverage company. Over the decades, Pepsi has diversified its portfolio of products from aerated drinks to chips, oatmeal, teas, healthy drinks and more.

Coke on the other hand has gone for a monopolization of the drinks market or what’s known as a “pure play” in drinks. They have also worked harder than Pepsi to establish a global brand, and have been far more successful in marketing their core product line which is Coke itself.
As both the brands still compete for toe-to-toe for the spotlight, we can assure you one thing: one always prefers one cola over the other and you’ll never find someone who enjoys both. So tell us in the comments below which one do you prefer, Coke or Pepsi.
